14 Mukhi Rudraksha — The Divine Eye of Lord Shiva
Among the many sacred beads that the rudraksha tree offers to the spiritual seeker, few command the reverence held for the 14 Mukhi Rudraksha. Known in the scriptures as Dev Mani — the "jewel of the gods" — it is counted among the rarest and most powerful of all rudrakshas. Tradition holds that it sprang directly from the third eye of Lord Shiva, and so it is also called the Mahashani or Trinetra bead, the "Divine Eye." To wear it is said to be like carrying a fragment of Shiva's own vision: the power to see beyond the surface of things, to perceive what is hidden, and to walk through life with foresight and unshakable courage.
The Bead and Its Fourteen Faces
A rudraksha is identified by its mukhis — the natural clefts or lines that run from the crown of the seed to its base, dividing the surface into distinct faces. The 14 Mukhi bears fourteen such lines, each formed not by human hand but by the tree itself, which is one reason a genuine bead is treasured and a counterfeit is so easily betrayed.
The number fourteen carries its own resonance in Hindu cosmology. It echoes the chaturdasha bhuvana — the fourteen worlds or planes of existence — and the fourteen Manvantaras that measure the great cycles of creation. A bead marked with fourteen faces is therefore felt to hold within its small body a map of the cosmos, a seed that contains the whole.
